PSALM 130:3
If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
It is good to feel the weight of this sentence. Who could stand? If the holy God and creator of all life were to mark iniquity, we are done for.
We miss this if we are merely comparing ourselves with one another; if we don’t look to the perfect holiness of Jesus but instead the more attainable righteousness of man. Being “good” all of a sudden looks pretty easy.
But if God is the judge who weighs and examines us, that is a different story. All our actions, words, thoughts, motives are on display. Nothing is hidden from him and he won’t brush anything to the side.
If that is the case O Lord, who can stand? Have mercy on me God, a sinner.
